SELECTIVE ROOT PRUNING WITH HYDRO-EXCAVATION FOR TREE PROTECTION

This method is particularly useful for projects requiring precise intervention within a tree's Structural Root Zone (SRZ) or Nominal Protection Zone (NPZ) for - :

-
Installing front fence posts, retaining walls, or similar structures near significant street trees or garden trees.

-
Constructing or protecting garden beds, driveways, and pathways.

-
Preparing sites for concrete pours (e.g., strip footings or bored piers) by pruning obstructing roots in advance.

-
Installing underground services (pipes, cables) in tree-sensitive areas.

-
Addressing and mitigating root damage from prior excavation or construction activities.

Hydro excavation gently exposes roots using low-pressure water jetting and vacuum extraction, preserving root bark and minimising soil disturbance. Selective pruning follows immediately using sharp, sterilised tools (loppers, secateurs, or chainsaw as appropriate)to make clean cuts that promote compartmentalisation and reduce decay risk. Selective pruning targets those roots whose removal is unavoidable. We aim to cut roots as far from the trunk as possible, retaining major structural roots to maintain tree stability.

All work is performed by a qualified arborist (min AQF Level 5) qualified arborists, adhering to best practices in AS 4970-2025. (Protection of Trees on Development Sites).
We emphasise minimal root loss, and root bark protection in backfilling with compatible soil

By combining hydro excavation with selective root pruning, Root Zone Management Company enables clients to meet construction goals, ensure council compliance, and protect Melbourne's urban forest responsibly delivering sustainable, low-impact outcomes.
